Canvas Print Description

Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s idyllic scene of nineteenth century Paris was, to the people of the time and certainly to his rural Impressionist cohorts, a bustling scene of urban modernity. It is a fairly unique work of early Impressionism — the loose group of likeminded friends did not often portray the realities of city life, preferring instead to turn themselves towards the countryside surrounding Paris, where city-folk would retreat from the pressures of modern life. Painted in 1872, “Le Pont Neuf” depicts an elegant bridge in the center of Paris in a neat, ordered, and slightly sterile manner. But the effect is not the fault of the painter, as the center of Paris was in the clutches of the most ambitious urban regeneration in history. After a spate of revolutions exacerbated by street fighting the powers that be decided to make the city easily defendable from its own citizens. Orchestrated by the controversial town planner Baron von Haussmann, the winding, labyrinthine streets of medieval Paris were torn up and its’ urban poor displaced. The reason was to clear vast swathes of inner-city land to create the expansive boulevards we know today. What replaced the crumbling beauty of long-gone Paris was an elegant array of modern apartment blocks, all seemingly identical. Despite the beauty of Renoir’s exuberant portrayal of the scene, within the brushwork and between the frame one can see the seeds of discontent. Renoir’s own relatives were evicted from their homes to make way for the regeneration of Paris, and it was from the endless construction works that the Impressionists fled to make their seminal works of light and natural beauty.
