Smith first worked as a kindergarten teacher before pursuing art, studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later under renowned illustrator Howard Pyle. Known for portrayals of childhood and family life, she created beloved imagery for magazines and classic children’s books, capturing warmth, imagination, and storytelling through graceful composition and luminous color.
