Canvas Print Description

Joseph Mallord William Turner’s 1844 canvas “Rain, Steam and Speed” is as revolutionary and futuristic as it gets, having paid witness to as dramatic a moment of historical change as the moon landings or the Russian revolution. Turner’s magnificent masterwork is an elegy to the final nail in the coffin of the English countryside, and the great innovation of the British Industrial Revolution: the steam-train. As dizzying as an early-twentieth century work of Italian futurism, Turner’s “Rain, Steam and Speed” contrastingly still reveals elements of the natural world. This elemental vision of the present blurs the earthy tones of the rolling English countryside with the furious pounding of rain and never-before-seen speed. The result is an iconic vision of speed and movement, all seen from a brand new railway bridge crossing the River Thames. Like much of the artist’s works, this canvas is a pre-Impressionist blend of elongated forms, tactile brushwork, and raw physical energy. Arguably the greatest English artist, Turner has no comparable contemporaries. Celebrating the ingenuities of the great British century — an era of cruel imperial expansion and ambitious local building projects — and mourning the subsequent effects on the landscape and the populace, Turner’s century was a grandiose drama of energy and empire. But the true star of “Rain, Steam and Speed” is a small and inconsequential animal: a hare. In the bottom right corner of the frame the wild rabbit outpaces the thundering new machine, all the while existing as the sole vestige of natural life in a steel future of machinery and steam.
