Canvas Print Description

Winslow Homer’s stunning and poignant allegory of the American experience on the occasion of the nation’s centenary is a mix of elemental forces and human vulnerability. Started in 1873 and finished three years later, “Breezing Up” (or A Fair Wind) is the product of the artist’s intimate knowledge of the waters around the East Coast. His vision captures a wayward boat held fast at the helm by a group of young boys, who appear utterly at ease in their environment. They guide the fragile craft with the resilience and confidence of the young American nation who, only a few years before Homer began work on this canvas, had suffered the savage brutality of the Civil War. Rich in compositional depth and balance, Homer depicts his young navigators in the process of guiding their nation-ship onto a new horizon. Homer’s works are engrained on the memory of the American popular imagination. Sitting at the interstice between magazine illustration, advertising iconography, and fine art, “Breezing Up” (or A Fair Wind) is an image that summed up the free-market aspirations of an ambitious young country. Having honed his style as a reporter for Harper’s Weekly during the Civil War, Homer was able to draw upon a demonstrated ability to condense dramatic, fraught situations into an easily digestible visual account. With this fantastic sense of balance, Homer also drew upon his direct acquaintance with an artistic style that was turning the world on its head. Viewing the work of the Impressionists in Paris, Homer adopted their rendering of light upon the surface of water to create a profound meditation on the temporality of men and the boundless horizon of human hope.
