The Story of Canvas in Art: How Canvas Became the Standard for Paintings

At iCanvas, we’ve been experimenting with various canvas materials since 2009 to see what would produce the most beautiful prints possible. We originally started using 100% cotton, but ultimately switched to a polycotton blend after realizing how much more consistent our reproductions were, and saw their quality drastically improve.

We recognize that the difference in cost has been the biggest difference maker: polycotton canvases are long-lasting, produce authentic-looking art prints for nearly all works of art, and are affordable to almost anyone today.   Read on to learn how the art world adopted canvas as the preferred painter’s medium, and how our canvas material choices have shifted dramatically.
