Various Takes on the Eiffel Tower in Art

Long synonymous with the beauty and elegance of Paris, the Eiffel Tower’s iconic structure has been painted, photographed, etched, and more since its debut at the 1889 World’s Fair. Whether you’ve called Paris home, visited on vacation, appreciate its history, or are simply a Francophile, art showcasing the “Iron Lady” is a great way to bring Parisian vibes home.

After beating out more than 100 other artist submissions to create the exposition’s entrance, the construction firm Eiffel et Compagnie was granted the opportunity to build the welcoming monument to the World’s Fair. Two years, several hundred workers, and about 2.5 million rivets later, the Eiffel Tower was completed. Standing at nearly 1,000 feet high, it was the tallest structure in the world until New York’s Chrysler Building in 1930.

Thanks in part to numerous pop culture appearances like James Bond movies and Britney Spears music videos, today the structure is one of the most recognizable in the world. While at the time many locals considered it an eye sore, today it’s geometric design, towering height, and surrounding sights make it the perfect subject for artists worldwide. From delicate pastels to bold graphic design to surreal photography, the Eiffel Tower is represented across artistic styles and genres.
