Martin Hsu: Whimsical Creatures and Scenes

Hsu’s technique fuses calligraphy with materials like wood, metallics, and silk to produce a contemporary Asian-inspired style. It’s no surprise if his work seems familiar, as he has animated well-known characters for Nickelodeon and Disney. Stemming from his own lament for humanity’s destructive relationship with our living world, he creates mythical characters living in peaceful contentment and harmony with nature.

The San Francisco-based artist has competed against other artists on reality TV, been commissioned by brands like Google and Salesforce, and been featured in galleries throughout the United States and Taiwan. Although his resume is extensive, his goal is simple — to bring a little bit of light to the world.
