Curations We Love

Various Takes on American Gothic

Painted in 1930 by Grant Wood, “American Gothic” is one of the most recognizable works of art. Winning a multitude of awards and recognitions throughout the years, it’s a huge part of the American art movement called Regionalism. To express our admiration for this legendary art piece, we put together a curation showcasing the various ways artists pay homage to this museum classic creation.

Inspired by a visit to Eldon, Iowa, Grant Wood came up with the concept of “American Gothic” based on “a cottage built on severe Gothic lines”. With his sister and dentist as his models, he depicted them as a farmer father and daughter. It’s often said that this piece reflects hard workers through a conservative lens, as well as the “association Americans have with their homes as extensions of themselves, especially in rural America”. Although the hidden meanings behind the painting have shifted throughout the years, this general interpretation remains most popular.

While there are many ways artists are inspired by “American Gothic”, our curation focuses on seeing this classic print, reimagined. Each version gives a unique and unexpected spin on this legendary artwork. From vintage digital scenes to hand drawn depictions to detailed oil paintings, these renditions span across different art styles.
