The Plague - Canvas Print

Death sweeps low over an abandoned village street in The Plague, a skeletal rider swinging a scythe atop a winged, bat-like beast as fallen bodies lie in its wake. Arnold Böcklin builds the scene in smoky charcoal and sandy ochre beneath a sickly yellow-green sky, with the dry, chalky brushwork giving the whole thing a fresco-like weight. It's a haunting, unforgettable piece, the kind of dark allegorical wall art that anchors a study, library, or gallery wall with serious gravity.
