Don Quixote, c.1865-1870 - Canvas Print

A lone rider crosses a barren stretch of terracotta hills beneath a deep Prussian blue sky, his gaunt white horse rendered in fluid, ghostlike brushstrokes. Lance raised skyward and features dissolved into a wash of reddish tone, this is Don Quixote as myth more than man, wandering and unmistakably alone. Daumier's expressive impasto gives the scene a weathered, timeless quality that feels equal parts melancholy and heroic. Hung in a study or reading nook, Don Quixote brings a sense of quiet adventure and literary depth as wall art that rewards a long look.

• By Honore Daumier, working in expressive oil painting with sculpted impasto texture

• Available as a canvas print, where the brushwork and texture come through

• Complements literary and traditional home decor with an air of old-world character

• Solitary knight on horseback rendered in realist, proto-expressionist style
