Painted in 1817, “The Wanderer Above The Sea of Fog” by Caspar David Friedrich is a monument to the archetypal Romantic figure — a solitary walker, far removed from the bustling environs of trade and at one with nature. Friedrich, often cited as the pre-eminent iconographer of the Romantic tradition, casts his complex gaze deep into the heart of man as an individual. The figure with his back turned resolutely to the viewer is the artist himself, but the piece is no mere brush-off to his assumed audience. Instead, the viewer is a fellow traveller, sharing the artist’s viewpoint, and the sole confidant to the wanderer in this dramatic voyage of personal discovery. Contemplative and removed from the toils of materiality, the protagonist of the piece has been seen as an encapsulation of the Romantic ideal: liberated yet anchored by his own angst and inner turmoil. Having moved to Dresden in the latter part of the eighteenth century, Friedrich became a key figure in the pre-Romantic movement in literature and painting that was triggered by Goethe’s 1775 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. His symbolic landscapes and defiant scenes of pre-Christian paganism set Friedrich apart from the wistful landscapes that came to sum-up Romanticism in art. Acutely attuned to the landscape of his northern and central Germany, the artist reflected the ingenuity and aspirations of the German people, whose series of revolutions — inspired by the Romantic ideal of personal freedom — would produce some of the greatest minds and ideals of the nineteenth century.
