Inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem ’Come into the Garden, Maud’ “The Soul of The Rose” by John William Waterhouse is a poignant meditation on lost love and a life without romance. As the wistful woman deliberates upon her amorous possibilities, so too does the artist ruminate upon his career spent utilizing women as carriers of ideas and bearers of symbols. Upon its first exhibition to the public in 1908, Waterhouse’s canvas became an instant success. Already a renowned and acceptable figure of pleasant Victorian iconography, Waterhouse’s warm and ethereal color scheme evokes the gentility and serenity of an English garden. Yet the swarming sense of majesty in the pastel landscape pales beside the humility and majesty of Waterhouse’s female figure. Having made his name two decades before with the stunning Symbolist masterpiece The Lady of Shalott, Waterhouse approached his “The Soul of The Rose” with a completely fresh eye. Usually better acquainted with employing ancient myths or medieval legends, the artist’s use of the near-contemporary poem from Alfred Lord Tennyson rings the funeral bell on the Victorian way of life that, by the early-twentieth century was already looking archaic. Waterhouse’s curiously modern woman acted as the perfect mediator between two vastly different worlds, separated by less than a decade. Perhaps finally realizing the tragedy that was made to befall almost all of his previous female studies, the artist allowed “The Soul of The Rose” to contemplate her own presence in the world, rather than having her fate inflicted upon her by a male gaze or by the pressures of ancient myths.
