Canvas Print Description

Painted in 1658-1660, “The Milkmaid” by Johannes Vermeer is a sublime balancing act of restraint, humanism, and painterly ingenuity. The scene takes place in a confined space, lit by an open window at the top left. It was in this familiar space that most of Vermeer’s remarkable body of work was set — often with recurring models and a repeated use of props. As such, Vermeer’s canvases are often testaments to artistic economy, revealing what can be achieved through limited means and with little embellishment. The character of “The Milkmaid” fills the central space of the table. Around her many objects of her daily life are distributed almost like separate still life studies: the basket and lamp hanging on the wall, the wooden foot-warmer placed on the floor, the bread basket on the table, all of which come towards the viewer as totems of the life of an individual. During the Dutch Golden Age of painting, the figure of “The Milkmaid” was often used as an allegory for sexual lasciviousness, yet in Vermeer’s “The Milkmaid” the figure is allowed to exist on her own merits. She is the image of the pious servant, a model of virtue that resists the contemporary fantasies of domestic servants as permissive objects. As with many of the artist’s works it is the character’s interaction with their daily objects that gives the piece its transcendental beauty. Surrounded by local Delft wall tiles and earthenware pots, Vermeer immortalizes his subject in a moment of mundane routine.
