“The Bed” by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec is an almost incomparable articulation of the strength of human companionship, warmth, and desire. The resonance and elegance of his tousled forms, lost under cloaks and folds of billowing bed sheets, is a poignant reminder of the humanity behind his often-sordid protagonists. Renowned for capturing the exploits of the Parisian underworld around the cabarets and brothels of Montmartre, Lautrec’s subjects were his neighbors and friends, his drinking partners and favorite prostitutes. He painted failed, greying artists, bejeweled procuresses, notorious pimps, and nimble dancers. Although rarely straying more than a kilometer from his studio, Lautrec’s short life and expansive oeuvre seems to encapsulate the whole gamut of human hope, loss, and love. To cope with a life selling their bodies, many prostitutes in Lautrec’s Paris turned to each other for companionship, and as such many of his scenes involve lesbian relationships. His 1892 pastel canvas “The Bed” depicts one such relationship and is all the more tender when one considers the brutal reality these women are finding respite from. Heightening the intimacy of the subject by narrowing the spatial frame of the perspective, the artist pushes the viewer right onto “The Bed” and into the world of these young, fraught lovers. Just about to fall asleep under the colossal weight of an all-encompassing blanket, the plight of his protagonists is not one to be pitied, indeed the sense of loyalty and love that emanates from the painting has made art-lovers jealous for over a century.
