Having first appeared in both London’s Curtain Road and beside Waterloo Train Station, Banksy’s “Snorting Copper” is the perfect anti-establishment image for the twenty-first century. Bereft of the artist’s trademark wit or social commentary, Banksy this time went straight for the jugular. A British policeman, ignobly kneeling with his face to the floor, snorts a line of cocaine from the bare city streets. The line itself was constituted by a drip of white paint that stretched an immense length down the pavement. What passers-by were confronted with — even those familiar with taking the drug — was a narcotics enforcement officer about to snort the biggest line imaginable. All the while the policeman, about to ingest a dried line of the artist’s paint, is turned into a figure as desperate for his fix as the user he hounds. As in most countries, claims of police corruption are rife in the UK. Since “Snorting Copper” appeared in 2006, most of those claims, formerly thought to be baseless, were confirmed tenfold. While it is mostly an urban myth that seized narcotics end up ingested at the police station on a Friday night, the mass public suspicion of the force was enough to make this a particularly popular and frequently reproduced image. With its apt placement within the urban environment, beside haunts frequented by city workers and young revelers, Banksy’s piece is a triumph of site-specific populism, and has entertained Londoners with its sneering anti-establishment ethic for almost a decade.
