Joseph Ducreux’s 1783 “Self-Portrait (Yawning)” is a stunning glimpse of humor and personality, far removed from the upright poses and rigid stoicism that was expected of portrait sitters before the mid-twentieth century. Ducreux, portrait artist to Queen Marie Antoinette, often placed himself as the subject for many of his more experimental works. These pieces, aiming to catch the attention of potential patrons, served to highlight the boundless horizons of the artist’s skill and imagination. “Self-Portrait (Yawning)” elegantly combines in one gesture the yawn, the stretch, and the relaxed satisfaction that follows. This casual work features the artist decked out in a night-hat, inviting the eighteenth-century viewer a rare glimpse of the artist’s intimate domestic habits. A stunningly original painting for the time, Ducreux’s works have recently caught the attention of the Internet’s iconoclastic masses. One of his later paintings has since become a popular meme, seeing countless jokers add their own caption to a jaunty image of the artist pointing towards the viewer. Experimenting with the traditional limitations of the genre of self-portraiture Ducreaux is in the midst of an immense yawn. His mouth opens wide; his face contorts with the stress, his right arm punching toward the viewer. Holding this exaggerated pose, he sways back and his stomach pushes forward; His Entire body presses up close to the outer limits of the picture. As such, this work is also a study of the physiognomy of the human body. “Self-Portrait (Yawning)” could also be a wry comment on the rather staid tastes of his contemporary artistic society.
