Canvas Print Description

“Monopoly (Occupy London)” by Banksy is one of the artist’s most memorable objects, and a testament to his ability to offer a sharp, succinct, and swift reaction and reflection of dramatic and divisive national issues. Occupy London was a short-lived protest camp that existed in two locations in central London — beside St Paul’s Cathedral and Finsbury Square between October 2011 and June 2012. Having begun in solidarity with the US-based Occupy Wall Street movement, the mass protest decried the toxic housing market, corporate greed, and the rampant culture of banking in the City of London. Camping out for most of the entire winter, the occupants’ spirits were lifted when Banksy delivered his own version of the family board game Monopoly. Notorious for instilling in young children the ethics of market capitalism, Banksy’s intervention perfectly articulated the mood of the Occupy London camp. Complete with a shriveled, Rich Uncle Pennybags begging for money in his upturned hat, Banksy seized every opportunity to make his piece resonate. With a toy sports car and army boot painted silver, Banksy attacks the sordid world of banker’s bonuses and economic inequality. The piece was so lifelike it could have almost been played were it not valued at $600,000 almost as soon as it had appeared. Out in the open and vulnerable to graffiti tagging, the work did not last long in its original state. Yet the magic of this piece, unlike his museum-based objects, was that it existed in the same contested space as his graffiti murals; the public domain, whereby the changing political and social atmosphere would at once change the nature and image of the sculpture itself.
