Canvas Print Description

Banksy’s “Mild Mild West” takes pride of place in the artist’s body of work as the earliest large-scale piece to have survived. It was one of the first recognized pieces of graffiti artwork to appear in the gritty, party hub known today as the ‘People’s Republic of Stokes Croft’ in Bristol. When the artist created the piece the area was notorious for it’s drug culture, nightlife, and rising crime rates. Today, it is a wholesome, rough-around-the-edges, testament to the lazy energy of Bristol’s creative scene. That the area is now one of the UK’s dominant preserves of urban art, sanctioned and even encouraged by the council, makes “Mild Mild West” even more of a visceral local landmark. It depicts, in-keeping with the Bristol character, a fluffy teddy bear hurling a Molotov cocktail at a line of police. It is a reflection of a dual national trait: the sudden leap from moderation to political outrage. Having topped the vote in the Alternative Landmark of Bristol poll, the piece was unfortunately defaced with red paint in 2009. In a humorous reversal of the usual fortune of Banksy’s artworks, the piece was lovingly restored by a local group, and appears to this day as it originally did when it was first daubed on the red-brick wall. Despite his work appearing in the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, and his works continuing to spring up from time to time in and around the South West, Banksy is a force strangely absent from Bristolian culture. But memories remain resonant of the late 1990s when Banksy was just local figure that it was possible to meet down the pub.

Canvas Print Framing Options

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

All of our artwork comes gallery wrapped.  The image is stretched around the sides and stapled to the back of the wooden frame.  Your piece of art will be ready to hang, and will include an easy-to-use hanging kit.

Floating Frame

Floating Frame

A little “armor for your art” that won‘t obscure the canvas.  Your canvas print is gallery wrapped and mounted to a 2" thick, elegant, black hard wood frame.  The art is inset, leaving a 3/8" space between the art and frame, creating the illusion that your art is “floating.”

Standard Frame
