Canvas Print Description

In a wry rendition of the familiar Anglo-American idiom ‘to sweep it under the carpet’ - to attempt to mask a problem instead of dealing with it — Banksy’s "Maid in London"lifts the very fabric of the city streets to conceal the nefarious trappings and hypocrisies at the heart of western life. When the large-scale work first appeared in 2007 many felt that the piece was a pithy analysis of the global issues that western governments would rather sweep under the carpet, favoring instead trade contracts and reforms that showed a demonstrated bias for big business. In a rare example Banksy commented on the work, claiming that the maid stood for the democratization of subjects as the protagonists of portraits. As it turns out, the maid from the mural was in fact modeled on a maid named Leanne who serviced the artist’s LA motel. In this incarnation see is seen emigrated to work perpetually keeping the questionable ethics of western policy out of sight. Having first appeared on the whitewashed wall of East London’s premier commercial art gallery the White Cube, "Maid in London"was a notable departure from the artist’s previous choice of location. By stenciling one of his pieces onto the outer wall of a prestigious gallery Banksy both acknowledged and refuted his steady march into the world of fine art. Although the disappearance of the work some two months later was blamed once again on over-zealous anti-graffiti teams, local businesses were quick to blame the White Cube Gallery for the act of site-specific iconoclasm. Maybe they thought Banksy just hadn’t made it just yet.

Canvas Print Framing Options

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

All of our artwork comes gallery wrapped.  The image is stretched around the sides and stapled to the back of the wooden frame.  Your piece of art will be ready to hang, and will include an easy-to-use hanging kit.

Floating Frame

Floating Frame

A little “armor for your art” that won‘t obscure the canvas.  Your canvas print is gallery wrapped and mounted to a 2" thick, elegant, black hard wood frame.  The art is inset, leaving a 3/8" space between the art and frame, creating the illusion that your art is “floating.”

Standard Frame

Gold & Silver finish

Mottled Gold & Silver frames are hard wood with a textured metallic finish. Silver pairs well with cool colors and dark backgrounds like black or navy and will give your art a modern look. The more versatile gold frame option pairs particularly well with classic art, traditional décor, and warmer colors.
