Banksy’s sandwich-board wearing monkey is joined by a troupe of identical cohorts, standing sullenly emblazoned with the phrase “Laugh now, but one day we’ll be in charge.” They pose in perfect reproduction, like a Warhol lithograph, multiplied into a ubiquitous public declaration. Usually the reserve of the local delicatessen or the prophet of doom, the sandwich board — like the art of graffiti — is a tool of public dissemination and advertisement. Often one of the lowest-paid and most menial of jobs, the sandwich-board worker becomes for Banksy a symbol of the cyclical machinations of economic prosperity, allegorizing the well-known epithet of ‘those who are first will soon be last.’ The piece is particularly representative of the artist’s early work, with its stark, simplistic, pop-culture ideology, and wide public appeal. Having appeared in various versions in 2002, some of which featured the phrases “Keep It Real,” and “Lying To The Police Is Never Wrong”, one notable version earned the accolade of being one of the first pieces sold at the artist’s long-forgotten first exhibition ‘Existencilism’ at the 33 1/3 Gallery in Los Angeles. Notably, this particular work is one of the very few commissioned pieces in the entirety of Banksy’s career. Completed for the interior of a small nightclub in the Southern English town of Brighton, the piece — almost inevitably due to its clear rights of ownership — was one of the first to be auctioned in a landmark sale of urban art at the Bonhams auction house in 2008, reaching a price of almost $500,000.
