Canvas Print Description

It is one of the earliest examples of the renowned guerilla artist’s work and certainly one of the most iconic. “Golf Sale”, brimming with political iconoclasm, caustic humor, and the wry appropriation of historical images that would become his trademark over the subsequent decade, is a powerful and influential piece of twenty-first century art. Having first appeared in 2000 in the southern city of Bristol in the United Kingdom, “Golf Sale” is sharp-as-a-razor social commentary, indicting the wayward shift towards consumerism that the artist saw was endemic in his local society. Fast-forward over a decade and the picture could not look more different. With socio-political issues now firmly tied to consumer habits and global trade, Banksy’s “Golf Sale” predicted a dystopia that was to emerge sooner than the artist thought. The piece is an appropriation of one of the most enduring images of the twentieth-century. The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 occurred in Beijing’s central square and saw thousands of students rally against political corruption and in solidarity with the wave of revolutions that were gathering steam across Eastern Europe. Facing up to a line of government tanks, a sole protestor with a shopping bag stood in front of the whole division, maneuvering himself each time the tanks attempted to pass him. In Banksy’s version, the figure is cast as an individual holding a placard directing shoppers towards a “Golf Sale”. Often one of the lowest-paid jobs on offer to newly arrived migrants, the human-advertising board is a sullen replacement for the placard-wielding demonstrator of the 1989 anti-Soviet revolutions.

Canvas Print Framing Options

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

All of our artwork comes gallery wrapped.  The image is stretched around the sides and stapled to the back of the wooden frame.  Your piece of art will be ready to hang, and will include an easy-to-use hanging kit.

Floating Frame

Floating Frame

A little “armor for your art” that won‘t obscure the canvas.  Your canvas print is gallery wrapped and mounted to a 2" thick, elegant, black hard wood frame.  The art is inset, leaving a 3/8" space between the art and frame, creating the illusion that your art is “floating.”

Standard Frame

Gold & Silver finish

Mottled Gold & Silver frames are hard wood with a textured metallic finish. Silver pairs well with cool colors and dark backgrounds like black or navy and will give your art a modern look. The more versatile gold frame option pairs particularly well with classic art, traditional décor, and warmer colors.
