Canvas Print Description

Banksy’s “Baby Carriage Rolling Down Stairs” is a stunning piece of site-specific urban art, interwoven and imprinted on the very scars of the city-space. Pieces like this remind the viewer of the debt that the graffiti artist owes to the elements and tactics of the 1960s avant-garde, and of his historical lineage to the revolutionary art of 1920s soviet iconography. Finely etched onto the gritty, industrial urban environment of Chicago, Banksy’s first attempt at adorning the city appeared in the West Loop area, sprayed onto the imprint left by an old set of stairs. By seizing on the material remnants of a former building, a space loved and occupied by residents over a lengthy period of time, Banksy draws upon the poignancy felt when the urban environment suddenly changes. Like artist Gordon Matta Clark’s sub-sections cut from buildings in the Bronx, Banksy’s piece uncovers the layers of historical meaning in lived architectural spaces. His piece, light and humorous as ever, is also a nod to Sergei Eisenstein’s iconic 1925 film Battleship Potemkin. Often cited as the most influential film of all time, Eisenstein’s work went a long way to consolidate the visual language of cinema. In a key scene in which government troops massacre innocent protestors, a mother is shot mid-way down the vast Odessa steps. In a tense masterwork of dramatic montage she loses grip on her pram sending it, and the baby, rocketing down the steps to an uncertain fate. “Baby Carriage Rolling Down Stairs” is a perfectly articulation of the Banksy aesthetic — accessible, yet steeped in a cultural-historic lineage that is inexorably tied to the urban environment, and to revolt.

Canvas Print Framing Options

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

All of our artwork comes gallery wrapped.  The image is stretched around the sides and stapled to the back of the wooden frame.  Your piece of art will be ready to hang, and will include an easy-to-use hanging kit.

Floating Frame

Floating Frame

A little “armor for your art” that won‘t obscure the canvas.  Your canvas print is gallery wrapped and mounted to a 2" thick, elegant, black hard wood frame.  The art is inset, leaving a 3/8" space between the art and frame, creating the illusion that your art is “floating.”

Standard Frame

Gold & Silver finish

Mottled Gold & Silver frames are hard wood with a textured metallic finish. Silver pairs well with cool colors and dark backgrounds like black or navy and will give your art a modern look. The more versatile gold frame option pairs particularly well with classic art, traditional décor, and warmer colors.
