Canvas Print Description

Banksy’s “Abstract Portrait of An Artist” holds a special place in the guerilla artist’s body of work. For an urban artist who more commonly uses the city as a canvas, Banksy’s work has gone on to command hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. “Abstract Portrait of An Artist”, created in 1998, is not only one of the artist’s earliest known works but is also the earliest work that Banksy intended for sale. Like many of his subsequent works, the canvas depicts an artist in the act of painting, and most importantly, in the act of subverting reality. Yet, this abstract painter is creating a piece that appears both anatomically and figuratively approximate to the human form. It is the reality depicted by the artist that is wild and abstract before the painterly interpretation of the artist who, capturing it from life makes the figure’s form a vivid interpretation of its inner self. Commonly ridiculed by those with a passing knowledge of art, Abstract painting emerged in the early years of the twentieth-century. The fledgling style initially aimed to visually interpret the sensory experiences of phenomena besides sight, and first capitalized on the geometric rhythms of Modernist music. With the arrival of Fauvism and Cubism, the expressionistic urge to represent the feeling and personality of an object rather than its visual likeness turned to the human form. Finally, with Picasso’s origami-like icons of Modernity the lasting reputation of Abstract painting was sealed. Banksy’s “Abstract Portrait of An Artist” is a return to the depthless obscurity of the Abstract style, completed in the artist’s uniquely irreverent manner.

Canvas Print Framing Options

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

All of our artwork comes gallery wrapped.  The image is stretched around the sides and stapled to the back of the wooden frame.  Your piece of art will be ready to hang, and will include an easy-to-use hanging kit.

Floating Frame

Floating Frame

A little “armor for your art” that won‘t obscure the canvas.  Your canvas print is gallery wrapped and mounted to a 2" thick, elegant, black hard wood frame.  The art is inset, leaving a 3/8" space between the art and frame, creating the illusion that your art is “floating.”

Standard Frame

Gold & Silver finish

Mottled Gold & Silver frames are hard wood with a textured metallic finish. Silver pairs well with cool colors and dark backgrounds like black or navy and will give your art a modern look. The more versatile gold frame option pairs particularly well with classic art, traditional décor, and warmer colors.
