Canvas Print Description

In a searing critique on the glamorization of violence, Banksy’s pastiche of an iconic boys-bedroom image — a decisive scene from Quentin Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction — is a thundering image of finely tuned site-specific art. Popping up in London’s East-Central area of Old Street, a neighborhood known at the time of the work’s inception for its mix of wry creative energy and spiraling gang-violence, the piece saw the artist replace the polished steel handguns with limp, over-yellow bananas. By defusing the machismo of the scene through the simple substitute, Banksy created an enduring image that appealed to a new generation who had grown tired of the blood-drenched shoot-em-ups that had long cast the net over their key demographic. As with many of the notorious street artist’s early works, the Pulp Fiction pastiche was removed in 2007 when it had reached an estimated value of $500,000. Erased by the building’s owners, in this case Transport for London, who felt it contributed to an atmosphere of grime and squalor, many local businesses quickly mourned the loss of a piece of street art that combined community cohesion with tourist pulling-power. Having removed the large-scale piece, the company claimed it had inadvertently lumped it in with less accomplished pieces of local graffiti and tags. With a caustic sense of humor a spokesman for the company retorted to complaints by saying, “our graffiti removal teams are staffed by professional cleaners not professional art critics.” In characteristic style, the wall did not remain bare for long. Banksy returned soon after the cleaning crews had finished to create a second version of the work. With their handguns returned to them, the Pulp Fiction characters are adorned in banana suits, seemingly desperately to question what element of the original seemed to contribute in any way to social violence.
